What do you do with dirty laundry in your RV? Do you have one of those mesh laundry bags stashed in the shower? A basket laying around that has to be constantly moved? Or is it just piled in a corner or on a bed? In the past, we used at least a couple of the methods mentioned above. Now, however, we have come up with, at least what we think, a pretty nice RV storag solution.

A Beautiful Sign

The sign that inspired the idea of the laundry drop.

For reference of what The Tin Can looked like before, check out our Pre-Renovation Walkthrough. During our renovation, we walled off one of the entrances to the bedroom. Why would one want to block off an entrance to their RV bedroom, you ask? I’ll explain that in a later post. One reason may be to hang this gorgeous basset hound picture that Angelica had made, though. Angelica commissioned her friend, Shannon, to paint it after seeing one she had done for her mother-in-law, who happens to the breeder we got our 3 bassets from. Shannon does beautiful work! You can find more of Louden Custom Creations work here. This sign was made especially for this wall. Or was the wall made especially for this sign? I’m not 100% sure. With this sign, though, an idea was born.

Add-In Wall

An RV Storage Idea Is Born

The idea was a way to have our dirty laundry stashed out of sight but still accessible to the kids. This brilliant RV storage idea is a laundry chute. Well, more of a laundry drop to be accurate. You see, this simple looking Basset Boulevard sign isn’t just attached to the wall looking pretty. It’s actually attached to the wall on a piano hinge. It hinges upwards to reveal a laundry basket sitting on a shelf in the bedroom. Yes, this simple basset sign keeps our laundry hidden from all who are in the living area of The Tin Can. At the same time, the laundry basket is easily accessible for removal from the bedroom. Genius, I know! How did I come ever come with this? I didn’t. Angelica did. It was her idea. She’s awesome like that!

Bring The Idea To Life

Before the new wall was installed in The Tin Can, I cut a hole in it a few inches smaller than the sign. I then reinforced the back side of the wall, above and below the hole, with a 1 X 4. On the back of the sign, I attached a piece of an old piano hinge, I had laying around, to the top. I then screwed the other side of the hinge to the wall, where I had reinforced it. With the wall and sign assembled, the wall was then installed in the RV.

On the other side of the wall, I cut out a piece of plywood and attached it to the RV wall on one side and the side of the entertainment center on the other. This is the shelf for the laundry basket. It is positioned a few inches below the bottom edge of the laundry drop hole. We also added two eyelets, one above the basket and the other at the bottom of the shelf to hook a bungee cord to hold the basket during travel.

Conclusion

Angelica couldn’t be more happy with my, I mean, her creation! It exclaims her love for basset hounds and keeps the laundry hidden and out of the way. What more could you ask for? The shelf also serves as the perfect spot for the some of the electronics in our bedroom. It multitasks, even better!

What are some of the ideas you have come up with for your dirty laundry? Please share them with us! We would love to hear about all your creative RV storage solutions.
