What’s in a color scheme?
That seems to be a pretty loaded question depending on who you ask. On a couple of RV renovation and interior
Some Background
In August of 2017, during a short trip together, Philip and I had discussed our full-timing possibilities and had decided that instead of spending the money to purchase a new trailer, that we would just renovate our current trailer. After all, our current trailer is PAID FOR. This was kind of a “far off” dream that we had… you know, after all of the kids were grown and moved away. Little did we know then that just a week later, Philip would be hospitalized with a terrible case of vertigo. A case severe enough to land him in the hospital for 7 days. During these 7 days, I stayed by his side. We talked, laughed, schemed & dreamed, specifically about this dream of becoming full-time travelers.
One evening in the hospital, we were discussing a little more in depth exactly how we would renovate our trailer. As Philip mentioned in his post We Are Down With This Flooring!, we knew that the flooring was one of the biggest things that we wanted to change. We began that night looking to see what the big box home improvement stores had to offer in the way of peel and stick vinyl flooring. We found what we thought would be the perfect flooring. With the flooring pulled up on the computer, we began talking about what color scheme we would pick for The Tin Can renovation. We pondered, went to Pinterest, looked online and looked some more. There are literally millions of different combinations out there. How in the world were we ever going to be able to pick and agree on just one? Before I even realized what was going on, I noticed that Philip had his phone out and was pointing it at different things in the room. He pointed it at the wall, the privacy curtain, the flooring. “WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE YOU DOING?”, I exclaimed! Being in that bed on complete bed rest for a week was obviously getting in his head. Philip is not a man who sits still AT ALL and hates to have a fuss made about him! He finally shared that he was using the Adobe Capture app on his phone to “capture” the colors of his hospital room. The colors were all saved on this phone for future use in creating our color pallet.
After being released from the hospital, we learned that it would be quite sometime before Philip could actually return to work. It took doctor appointments, testing, physical therapy, and ultimately 27 more days until he could return. That kind of time off for him was unheard of. In the beginning, we weren’t sure how much time he was going to have off, but we decided to begin this renovation. After all, we just had a small, simple list of renovations to complete. It went something like this: change the flooring, remove the dinette & the jackknife couch. THE END! After 7+ months of renovation, I can seriously sit back and laugh about that now!
Our Choices
On our first trip to a home improvement store to scout out the flooring we had chosen, we swung by the paint department. Philip pulled out his phone with all of the color samples that he had saved from his hospital room. We began picking up the color combination cards and comparing them to his samples and quickly came across one that we really liked. Not only did it contain some colors close to his samples, but it also reminded us of a place that we had visited during our travels. There were shades of dark greens, light blues, grays, creams, and browns. It was definitely shades of the Pacific Northwest. My parents have lived in Seattle, Washington for quite some time. We have enjoyed our visits exploring the PNW and it has become somewhat of a second home for us. You’ll have to stay tuned to see exactly how we pulled these colors together and made them work for us.
