cabin host spot

We often get asked, “what is camp hosting?” The short of camp hosting is that generally, you are volunteering your time in exchange for your full hookup campsite with no monetary compensation. We have already found that responsibilities and schedule vary greatly park to park. So far we have camp hosted at two different parks and in three different positions. I will walk through a typical day at each of our 3 positions.

Position #1 – Cabin Host

We were the only camper on approx 5 wooded acres near 6 lakefront cabins.

Our daily responsibilities included:

Picking up pine cones and sticks

Mowing the 5 acres

Assisting the housekeeper with cleaning the inside of the cabins

Cleaning fire pits and grills behind the cabins

Position #2 – Campground Host

We were one of two hosts in a 44 site campground with 2 comfort stations (bathhouses). We had off 2 days each week.

Our daily responsibilities included:

Picking up pine cones and sticks

Mowing around camp sites

Cleaning the comfort stations every night at 11pm

Reminding guest of park rules

Twice daily checks of campsites

Cleaning fire pits and campsites

Position #3 – Campground Host

We were one of four host families in a large campground. We worked for 2 days and were off for 6 days.

Our daily responsibilities included:

Cleaning fire pits and campsites

Cleaning all comfort stations

Selling ice and firewood

Cleaning the comfort stations may sound like a daunting task, but it really isn’t that bad. The toilets, showers, counters, and floors all have to be cleaned every night. If you stay on top of the comfort stations and check on them several times a day, they really aren’t too bad to clean. Especially as a family of 4, we get in, divide, and conquer.

What is Camp Hosting?

As I mentioned in my post, 5 Things We’ve Learned During Our First Month of Full-Time Living, some of our favorite times have been riding around in our golf cart picking up pine cones. Philip and I call that date time. It’s where we had a chance to decompress, talk about our day, and just talk in general. The girls also enjoy the one on one time of golf cart rides with mom or dad.

Check out part two of my series, “What is Workamping?”

In my next post, I will discuss workamping and how that differs from camp hosting.
